Dafoe misses out again on prize at SAG Awards
Willem Dafoe got run over again by the awards-season juggernaut that is “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” Sunday night.
At the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday, Sam Rockwell took home the award for best supporting actor for his performance as a difficult lawman in “Three Billboard,” winning out over, among others, castmast Woody Harrelson and Dafoe, the Appleton native who was nominated for playing the gruff but bighearted motel manager in “The Florida Project.”
“Three Billboards” had the most nominations — four — of any movie at this year’s SAG Awards, and won three of them Sunday night, taking home the prizes for best cast (SAG’s equivalent of best picture) and best actress for Frances McDormand.
Rockwell also won out over Dafoe Jan. 7 in the same category at the Golden Globes.
Dafoe hasn’t exactly come up empty this awards season: He’s been named best supporting actor by eight critics groups, with nominations from more than a half-dozen more.
And another rematch is looming: Dafoe and Rockwell are both expected to hear their names called Tuesday when the nominations for the 90th annual Academy Awards are announced. The Oscars ceremony is March 4.
A graduate of Appleton East High School who went to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Dafoe was an early member of Milwaukee experimental theater company Theatre X.
