Johnson, Hossler are tied for the lead
Dustin Johnson apparently has an issue with the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula only when the weather is ugly. Under a gorgeous sky Friday, the world’s No. 1 player shot a 7under 64 and shared the 36-hole lead with Beau Hossler in the AT&T Pebble Beach National ProAm.
Johnson opened with three straight birdies, including a 9iron on the par-3 11th. The weather was so foul last year that he hit 4-iron. He heads over to Pebble Beach for the final two rounds as he tries to win his second straight PGA Tour event.
Hossler played bogey-free at Spyglass Hill for a 67. They were at 12-under par.
Madison’s Steve Stricker fired a 65 at Monterey Peninsula and was three shots back. Jerry Kelly of Madison soared to a 76 at Monterey Peninsula and was well off the pace.
In the pro-am, Kevin Streelman and Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald held a four-stroke lead at 25under.
Stricker and country singer Toby Keith were at 13-under and Kelly and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers finished the day at 10-under.
Champions Tour: Mark Calcavecchia shot an 8-under 64 on to take the first-round lead in the Boca Raton Championship, the circuit’s first fullfield event of the season.
Rocco Mediate and Jeff Maggert were a stroke back. Mediate, the 2013 winner, eagled the seventh, hitting a 3-wood to 30 feet, but closed with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.
