Infant girl dies after rescue from fire

A girl who celebrated her first birthday in December died after being rescued from a house fire Saturday night, according to the Milwaukee Fire Department said Sunday.

Milwaukee police and fire department­s responded to a house fire Saturday night around 9:45 p.m. in the 2800 block of W. Meinecke Ave. said Deputy Chief Aaron Lipski.

The blaze was in the 2800 block of W. Meinecke Ave. on the city's west side. Firefighte­rs rescued the girl from the first floor of the two-story woodframe house. She died at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

The medical examiner said an autopsy for the 1-year-old girl is planned for Monday.

Family members identified the girl as Quamyiia Owens, according to Fox 6 News.

The home, which had working smoke detectors, sustained about $250,000 in damage, Lipski said.
