Darvish, Cubs finalize deal
Yu Darvish and the Chicago Cubs have finalized their $126 million, sixyear contract, by far the largest deal in a slow-moving free agent market.
The agreement announced Tuesday topped outfielder Lorenzo Cain’s $80 million, five-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Darvish joins a rotation that includes Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Jose Quintana and Tyler Chatwood.
Kershaw to set record: Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Clayton Kershaw will make his teamrecord eighth opening-day start, against the visiting San Francisco Giants on March 29.
Kershaw is tied with Don Drysdale and Don Sutton at seven opening-day starts.
Padres reliever goes on restricted list: The San Diego Padres placed reliever Jose Torres on the restricted list and said he won’t report for spring training with the team in Arizona because of a pending court case stemming from his arrest in Phoenix in December.
Torres pleaded not guilty Jan. 9 in Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix to charges in a Dec. 29 indictment: felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or dangerous incident and misdemeanor recklessly defacing or damaging property of another person.
Torres was arrested after a dispute during which he’s accused of brandishing a handgun and pointing it at a domestic violence victim, knocking a door off its hinges and punching a hole in another door.
