CAMP REPORT

- Todd Rosiak

On the field: The Brewers completed their third day of bullpen sessions in the best conditions yet. Among those throwing were top prospects Corbin Burnes and Luis Ortiz. Also, more position players continued trickling in, with Jonathan Villar and Hernán Pérez making their debuts in the clubhouse. Unofficially, the lone two position players yet to report are Ryan Braun and Orlando Arcia. The first official full-squad workout is Tuesday. Weather: 61 degrees, partly cloudy. Cactus juice: Manager Craig Counsell has continued his tradition of holding rounds of “get to know you” chats with all the players in major-league camp. He was asked Saturday if he’d learned anything interesting.

“We asked Corbin Burnes the first day, ‘Who’s the most famous person from Bakersfield?’ ” Counsell said. Burnes, who hails from the California town, was the team’s minor-league pitcher of the year in 2017.

“We were hoping he’d drop (Brewers vice president and assistant general manager) Matt Arnold, who he met for the first time in the Bakersfield airport and not at a Brewer-related event. “Then he dropped Merle Haggard on us.”

Scoreboard: The Brewers begin the exhibition season on Friday, Feb. 23, with split-squad games against the Chicago Cubs at Maryvale Baseball Park and the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale. Both games are at 2:05 p.m. Central.

Countdown: 39 days until the Brewers’ season opener March 29 in San Diego.
