CAMP REPORT

-

On the field: Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell announced left-hander Brent Suter would start the Cactus League home opener against the Chicago Cubs on Friday, while right-hander Aaron Wilkerson will take the ball against the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale as the team plays split-squad games.

Both pitchers could more accurately be described as "initial out getters," borrowing from Counsell's lexicon, because pitchers in both games likely won't throw for more than an inning.

Counsell said Ryan Braun won't play in either game, which is keeping in line with the schedule he's had in recent springs when he's been eased into action. Weather: 55 degrees, sunny.

Cactus juice: All 30 major-league teams are scheduled to wear Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School caps this weekend in a show of support for the Parkland, Fla., school and community rocked by last week's mass shooting that killed 17 people.

Players and coaches will then autograph the hats, which will be auctioned off for charity with the proceeds being donated to the official fund that will benefit the victims and their families.

"It's a show of support from baseball that we're thinking about you," Counsell said.

Counsell also had praise of the highest order for the students who stepped forward to urge lawmakers to try and curb mass school shootings.

"They were brilliant," he said. "I think we all think about how we feel about public speaking but that was a huge moment for young people who went through a lot.

"Man, it made me proud. How they handled themselves, it was absolutely magnificent."

Scoreboard: The Brewers begin exhibition play Friday with splitsquad games against the Chicago Cubs at Maryvale Baseball Park and the San Francisco Giants in Scottsdale. Both games are at 2:05 p.m. Central.

Countdown: 34 days until the Brewers' season opener March 29 in San Diego.
