CAMP REPORT

-

On the field: Boone Logan surrendered a three-run homer to left-handed hitter Daniel Vogelbach in the fifth inning, and that was all the Seattle Mariners needed to hand the Brewers their first home loss of the spring, 4-2.

It was the first appearance of the spring for Logan, who’s expected to fill a role as a left-handed specialist out of the bullpen for the Brewers. Another reliever making his first outing, Jacob Barnes, allowed Seattle’s fourth and final run in the sixth.

“I thought it was the first time they were all out there,” manager Craig Counsell said of Logan and Barnes. “They’re in the process of kind of getting themselves locked in.”

A third reliever making his first appearance, Jeremy Jeffress, walked a pair and struck out one in a scoreless inning. All was good for starter Junior Guerra, who allowed four hits and struck out three in three scoreless innings. Also, Counsell said RHP Adrian Houser will throw live batting practice Monday, his first significant action of camp after undergoing an emergency appendectomy.

Weather: 71 degrees, sunny. Cactus juice: It was a busy day at the Brewers’ Maryvale complex.

The day opened with a 10 a.m. “B” game featuring the Angels and Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani pitching against the Brewers, a spectacle that saw a huge contingent of Japanese and American media converge on the stadium to take in the right-hander’s outing. Ohtani pitched 22⁄3 innings and allowed four hits and two runs while striking out eight. Milwaukee’s first-round pick last year, Keston Hiura, opened the game with a ringing double off him.

The Brewers and the Mariners followed in a Cactus League game in the stadium, while a squad of Milwaukee minor-leaguers faced a Taiwanese professional team on one of the back fields.

Luis Ortiz and Jon Perrin, both in the midst of their first major-league camp with the Brewers, pitched with innings getting more scarce in Cactus League games.
