9-year-old girl fatally shot on north side
At least seven children under 13 shot since 2014
Milwaukee police are investigating the fatal shooting of an 9-yearold girl Saturday on the north side.
The child was shot shortly after noon inside a house in the 4500 block of N. 38th St., police said. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
The child’s parents were “being questioned regarding this investigation,” police said.
Police did not release any other details about the shooting.
Police cordoned off a bungalow on the east side of the street. And officers and chaplains could be seen outside the home.
A neighbor, Darnell Boyce, said he believed several young children live in the house. A second neighbor, who asked not to be named, said the family moved in about a year ago.
Boyce, who said he moved to the neighborhood a few months ago, said he saw several people in tears on the porch of the home early Saturday afternoon.
“To hear what happened — an 8year-old girl, that’s just crazy,” said Boyce, 32.
Initial reports had the girl as 8 years old.
The Rev. Alexis Twito, who oversees the Salvation Army’s interfaith chaplain program, said four chaplains were dispatched to the home to support family members.
Reggie Moore, who heads the city’s Office of Violence Prevention, said he was aware of the child’s death but was waiting for details to emerge before making a statement.
At least seven children age 13 and younger have been fatally shot in Milwaukee since 2014, according to police records and news accounts.
Those included 6-year-old Justin Evans Jr., who was shot in his grandmother’s yard last summer as he readied to go on a fishing trip with his stepdad.
