Dolphins expected to release DT Suh

-

The Miami Dolphins appear ready to move on without their defensive anchor.

Miami is strongly considering releasing five-time Pro Bowl tackle Ndamukong Suh when the NFL’s new year begins Wednesday, a person familiar with the situation said Monday.

Suh’s release is anticipated unless he agrees to a significant contract restructuring, which is unlikely. He signed a $114 million, six-year deal with the Dolphins when he joined them in 2015, and his base salary this year would be $17 million.

The 305-pound Suh clogs the middle and usually draws double teams, but he’s not a playmaker and has had only 151⁄2 sacks in three years with Miami. He has a reputation for needless penalties and dirty play, while his aloof personality raised questions about his leadership.

Suh, 31, has never won a playoff game, and with him last year, Miami finished 14th in run defense and 26th in sacks. He had 41⁄2 sacks and 48 tackles for the Dolphins, who went 6-10.

Raiders cut two: The Oakland Raiders released cornerback Sean Smith and former Green Bay Packers right tackle Marshall Newhouse to create more salary cap room heading into free agency.

Smith, 30, is facing legal problems. He will plead guilty Tuesday to a felony count of assault with great bodily injury in connection with an altercation in Pasadena last year.

Smith was signed as a big-ticket free agent in 2016 to a four-year, $38 million deal. But he never played up to that level, and the Raiders have decided to cut him instead of paying him $8.5 million this year.

Newhouse, 29, who played for the Packers from 2010-’13, started 14 games last season for the Raiders, but new coach Jon Gruden said at the combine that Newhouse’s play at right tackle last season was inconsistent.

Chiefs to release Hali: The Kansas City Chiefs will part ways with longtime linebacker Tamba Hali.

Hali, 34, was due a base salary of $5.75 million this season.
