Goggia wins downhill title

Sofia Goggia followed up her Olympic downhill gold medal by claiming the season-long World Cup title in the discipline Wednesday in Are, Sweden.

Lindsey Vonn narrowly beat Goggia to win the race but the American still ended up three points behind the Italian in the standings.

It was Vonn’s 82nd World Cup win, moving within four of Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86.

Alice Mckennis of the United States finished third, 0.28 of a second behind Vonn.

On the men’s side, Beat Feuz finished ahead of Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal to take his first career discipline title.

IDITAROD

Joar Ulsom of Norway has won the world’s most famous sled dog race after a grueling dash across Alaska’s rough terrain.

After nearly 1,000 miles, Ulsom came off the Bering Sea ice just outside Nome and ran the last few blocks as a crowd cheered him on. He becomes the third person born outside the U.S. to claim the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Tubby Smith has been fired as Memphis men’s basketball coach after two seasons amid dropping attendance and donations to the athletic department. Smith went 40-26 at Memphis, including 2113 this season.

Texas Southern 64, N.C. Central 46: Texas Southern got its first NCAA Tournament win in a First Four game in Dayton, Ohio. Demontrae Jefferson, a 5-foot-7 guard, scored 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Tigers, who face No. 1 seed Xavier on Friday.

TENNIS

Simona Halep fought the wind and a pesky opponent to reach the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., outlasting Petra Martic of Croatia, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 6-3. Also, Roger Federer defeated Jeremy Chardy of France, 7-5, 6-4, in the fourth round.

AUTO RACING

Lowe’s said it will end its sponsorshi­p of seventime champion Jimmie Johnson at the end of the season and leave NASCAR. Johnson made his Cup debut in 2001 with Lowe’s and he’s never had any other company as his primary sponsor.
