CAMP REPORT

-

On the field: Ryan Braun appears ready for the start of the regular season. He smoked a pair of home runs, including a second-inning grand slam, to power an 11-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday at Maryvale Baseball Park. Both of Braun’s homers were booming shots with the wind blowing out; in the first inning he nearly hit one over the batter’s eye in center field and his second-inning grand slam was a high, arcing blast to left-center. “My swing’s locked in,” said Braun, who is hitting .400. “The only thing I’ve tried to do all spring is not strike out, and I’ve struck out once in (19 plate appearances) and have (four) walks. Swing’s been good, approach has been great. I’m in a good place.” Braun again played first base, but said he plans to play a “game or two” in right field before the end of camp. “Who knows what’s going to happen or how things are going to play out,” said Braun, who started in right in 2014 and ‘15. “It just gives us as many options as possible, so might as well do it while we’re here.” The Brewers went deep five times in all, with Travis Shaw, Keon Broxton and Jake Hager joining Braun. Right-hander Jhoulys Chacín lowered his ERA to 0.87, allowing four hits, three unearned runs and a walk with three strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Weather: 81 degrees, partly cloudy. Cactus juice: In addition to providing relief for the Brewers out of the bullpen, Jeremy Jeffress is now serving as unofficial team motivator. The music selection he oversees in the Maryvale clubhouse in the morning is one way the righthander keeps his teammates engaged. Another less obvious way is the motivational message he pens on the greaseboard mounted just outside the clubhouse that faces the kitchen. Jeffress promises a new bit of wisdom by 8:30 each morning. Wednesday’s offering: “Practice like you’ve never won. Perform like you’ve never lost.” “I was sitting at home and saw a quote on social media, and I just wanted to share it,” Jeffress said. “I figured the best way to share it was to write it down so everybody could see it.” Jeffress makes it clear he doesn’t see himself as a budding Tony Robbins, but he’s still happy to get people thinking a little at the outset of the day. “It’ll be either motivational, funny, confidence,” he said. “It’s something that gets people’s minds going in the right direction. It’s like a starting point.” Scoreboard: Brewers 11, White Sox 3. Record: 13-6-1. Thursday: Brewers at Rangers, 3:05 p.m. Milwaukee LHP Brent Suter (2-0, 0.00) vs. Texas RHP Doug Fister (0-0, 0.00).
