‘Star Wars,’ ‘Jurassic Park’ top Pops lineup Pops specials
The Milwaukee Symphony will play one of its favorite composers twice next season, performing the John Williams scores to “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” and “Jurassic Park” while the movies are screened.
The symphony’s Pops season in 2018-’19 also will connect the music of the present to the past in a program featuring Broadway star Ann Hampton Callaway singing music from Adele to Ella Fitzgerald.
Unless otherwise noted, all concerts take place at Marcus Center’s Uihlein Hall, 929 N. Water St.
Pops subscription concerts
Nov. 2-4: Conductor Andreas Delfs leads a “Golden Age of Hollywood” program, with music from “Citizen Kane,” “Gone With the Wind,” “Lawrence of Arabia” and other epics.
Nov. 30-Dec. 2: The annual Holiday Pops program features conductor Stuart Chafetz and pianist Tony DeSare.
Feb. 1-3, 2019: Conductor Rob Fisher leads a concert version of the musical “Chicago,” including the songs “Razzle Dazzle” and “Mr. Cellophane.”
March 1-3, 2019: Callaway sings “Diva to Diva: From Ella to Adele,” with Delfs conducting.
May 3-5, 2019: Vocalists Denzal Sinclaire and Dee Daniels sing “Unforgettable: 100 Years of Nat and Natalie,” featuring the songs of Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie. Yaniv Dinur conducts.
Nov. 24-25: Dinur conducts the orchestra playing the score of “Jurassic Park” live while Steven Spielberg’s movie holds the audience rapt. (Nothing says Thanksgiving weekend like the open jaws of a big-screen T-rex.) At the Riverside Theater, 116 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Nov. 28: TV and Broadway star Megan Hilty (”Smash,” “Wicked”) sings, with Dinur conducting.
May 21, 2019: Vocalists AJ Swearingen and Jayne Kelli sings folk anthems of the 1970s by Carole King, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens and others. Dinur conducts.
June 9, 2019: James Delisco sings the music of Michael Jackson, from both his Jackson 5 and solo years.
July 5-7, 2019: Dinur leads the orchestra in John Williams’ score to “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back,” as the movie screens in the Marcus Center. Expect a Forceful performance.
