Pirates 13, TIGERS 10 (13 innings): Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer in the 13th inning to lift Pittsburgh over Detroit.

Nationals 2, REDS 0: Max Scherzer struck out 10 in six innings and Washington, in its first game with Dave Martinez as a major league manager, began defense of its NL East title by opening with a win over Cincinnati.

Yankees 4, BLUE JAYS 2: Masahiro Tanaka pitched six sharp innings and New York did fine without any pop from its sluggers. Giancarlo Stanton, who homered twice and doubled a day earlier in the opener, went 0 for 4.

Red Sox 1, RAYS 0: David Price was solid in his return to the Red Sox rotation, allowing four singles over seven scoreless innings of Boston’s victory over Tampa Bay.

RANGERS 5, Astros 1: Doug Fister mostly silenced the powerful Houston lineup for five innings in his Texas debut, Nomar Mazara homered for an early lead and the Rangers beat the Astros.

Angels at ATHLETICS (late): Marcus Semien singled into an empty center field with one out in the 11th inning to lift Oakland over Los Angeles 6-5 Thursday.

Cubs at MARLINS (late): Ian Happ homered on the first pitch of the major league season, and Anthony Rizzo made his emotional homecoming even more memorable with a home run, leading Chicago past Miami 8-4 Thursday. Rizzo homered into the upper deck in the second inning.

Philles at BRAVES (late): Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer with two out in the ninth inning, capping Atlanta’s comeback from a five-run deficit for a 8-5 win Thursday.

Rockies at D-BACKS (late): Jake Lamb doubled and singled to drive in four runs, Patrick Corbin struck out eight while pitching into the sixth inning and Arizona beat the Colorado 8-2 on Thursday.

Brewers at PADRES (late): Orlando Arcia singled in Ji-Man Choi with two outs in the 12th inning to lift Milwaukee over San Diego 2-1 Thursday.

Giants at DODGERS (late): Joe Panik homered off Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning and San Francisco beat Los Angeles 1-0 on Thursday.
