Tragedy strikes team

Canadians were moved to tears on Saturday after 14 people were killed and 15 others injured when a truck collided with a bus carrying a junior hockey team to a playoff game.

The bus driving the Humboldt Broncos had 29 passengers, including the driver, when it crashed at about 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35 in Saskatchew­an, Canadian police said.

Among the dead are Broncos head coach Darcy

Haugan, team captain Logan Schatz and radio announcer Tyler Bieber. Darren Opp, president of the Nipawin Hawks, who the Broncos were set to play against, said a semi T-boned the players’ bus – an account police confirmed.

TENNIS

Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison put the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 2012 by beating Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen, 5-7, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-4, Saturday to finish off an American sweep in Nashville, Tenn.

The United States now will play either Croatia or Kazakhstan in the semifinals Sept. 14-16.

John Isner and Sam Querrey set up the doubles match for the clincher by winning both their singles matches Friday at the Curb Events Center at Belmont University. Sock, who came in ranked 26th in doubles, and Harrison, 17th in the world, put the U.S. into the semifinals after taking three hours to finish off the Belgians.

NFL

Panthers three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Thomas Davis said he has been suspended by the NFL and will miss the first four games of next season after testing positive for a banned substance.

Davis posted a video on his Twitter account saying that he tested positive for an estrogen blocker.

Davis, a former Walter Payton Man of the Year award winner, said he has been taking the same supplement­s for the last seven or eight years and never had any issues. He said he has never tested positive for a steroid of HGH.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Gary Trent Jr. announced that he is leaving Duke after one year for the NBA draft.

Trent announced his decision through the school, and team spokesman Mike DeGeorge said the freshman guard is in the process of hiring an agent.

The son of NBA veteran Gary Trent became the third member of the Blue Devils’ freshman class to enter the draft, joining Marvin Bagley III and Trevon Duval. A fourth, Wendell Carter Jr., has yet to announce his decision. Trent is the 15th one-anddone freshman in the program history.

LACROSSE

John Wagner scored with 32 seconds left in overtime and Marquette edged host St. John’s, 11-10.

Wagner, who had a hat trick, has four winning goals this season for MU (5-4, 2-1 Big East).

HOCKEY

Karson Kuhlman had a goal and an assist, and Minnesota Duluth beat Notre Dame, 2-1, in St. Paul, Minn., to win the school’s second NCAA championsh­ip.

Jared Thomas also scored and Hunter Shepard stopped 19 shots for the Bulldogs (25-16-3). UMD also won the 2011 title at the Xcel Energy Center.

Andrew Oglevie scored and Cale Morris made 33 saves for Notre Dame (28-10-2), winless in two national title games. The Irish lost to Boston College in 2008.

Wolves 5, Admirals 1: Oscar Dansk made 25 saves as host Chicago turned back Milwaukee.
