Victim of beating dies; suspect to face charges

- Ashley Luthern

A 62-year-old Milwaukee man who was seriously beaten during what his family said was an attempted carjacking has died, officials said Monday.

Kenneth Deramus had been hospitalized since the Feb. 18 attack after suffering multiple facial fractures, a broken nose and brain bleeding.

His death is considered a homicide and police are seeking additional charges against the suspect, Dorian Ramsey, 31, who was charged with aggravated battery.

Ramsey remained in jail Monday on $7,500 bail.

According to the criminal complaint: The girlfriend of Deramus woke up to a car horn blaring. She looked outside and saw Deramus sitting in a car and yelling to the man next to him to “leave him alone.”

She went downstairs to let Deramus into the house on N. 3rd St., near W. Keefe Ave., and as she opened the door, she heard Deramus yell.

Then, she saw Ramsey punching her boyfriend in the face before “stomping” on his head. She yelled at Ramsey: “Get away from the car! Leave him alone! He isn’t messing with you!”

The woman called police and told them what was happening. She identified Ramsey as the attacker in a photo lineup.

Deramus was taken to Froedtert Hospital and was treated in the intensive care unit. He was not conscious to speak with investigators at the hospital.

His daughter, Kenisha Deramus, told WITI-TV (Channel 6) she believes her father was targeted for his new car and said he had crossed paths with Ramsey before.

She has set up an online fundraising site for donations to help fund her father’s funeral.

It can be found online at www.gofundme.com/memorial-for-kenneth-deramus.
