BILL MURRAY AND JAN VOGLER

-

Style:

Classical music and literary readings from a world-renowned cellist and a globally adored movie star.

Backstory:

At 20, native German Vogler was the youngest principal cellist in the history of the esteemed, 470-year-old Staatskapelle Dresden, an early milestone in an accomplished career that’s included premiere performances for accomplished composers like John Harbison and concerts with orchestras around the world. Murray first made a name for himself on “Saturday Night Live” from 1977 to 1980, followed by classic roles in “Caddyshack,” “Ghostbusters” and “Groundhog Day,” before proving his serious acting chops with his Oscar-nominated performance in “Lost in Translation.” They met on an international flight, became friends, and in 2017, released an album, “New Worlds.”

Why you should go:

Naturally, the curiosity factor is driving ticket sales; it’s not often the frequently elusive Murray performs in front of a live audience, and true to the album’s name, this is new territory for him. But on the album, Murray brings conviction to his cover of Van Morrison’s “When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God,” along with readings of works by Mark Twain and Walt Whitman. Vogler’s music, meanwhile, is lovely, his interpretations of Schubert, Bach, Gershwin and other composers accompanied on the album, and in concert, by fellow world-class musicians Vanessa Perez on piano and Mira Wang on violin.
