What to do with Harvey?

-

New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway says the team hasn’t made a decision on what to do with struggling pitcher Matt Harvey.

Harvey was tagged Thursday night for six runs in six innings of a 12-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves. After the game, the former ace took a firm stand against a possible move to the bullpen.

Asked Friday about Harvey’s future, Callaway said, “I think he made that pretty clear yesterday, that he wants to be a starter, and I don’t blame him. I think everyone wants to start. What we are trying to do as a team is do what’s best for the team and for the players.”

Harvey is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in four starts this year.

Callaway said he’d like for a player to support a new role. He said that isn’t necessary for a change to be made.

Rodon progressing: Carlos Rodon is relieved. He feels good and thinks he could return to the Chicago White Sox in late May.

The 25-year-old Rodon was in Chicago for a checkup with a team doctor and a side session in front of White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper. The lefthander is expected to begin pitching in extended spring training games in Arizona next week.

Rodon is coming back from arthroscopic left shoulder surgery in September. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft went 2-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 12 starts before returning to the DL.

“You never think surgery is a good thing, but in this case it’s not bad at all,” Rodon said.

Finally ready to go: The Seattle Mariners activated catcher Mike Zunino from the 10-day disabled list after he missed the first three weeks of the season because of a abdominal strain.

Zunino was injured during batting practice the day before the regular-season opener. Zunino had performed well during spring training, hitting .395 with five home runs in 17 games.

He’s coming off a career-best 2017 season in which he hit .251 with 25 home runs and 64 RBI in 124 games.

Rays lose centerfielder: Tampa Bay Rays centerfielder Kevin Kiermaier has had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb that will sideline him two to three months.

Kiermaier was injured sliding headfirst into second base during a 10-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. He had the procedure Friday.

This is the third straight season the two-time Gold Glove winner will miss significant time because of injury.

Napoli done for season: Former Cleveland Indians slugger Mike Napoli will undergo season-ending knee surgery after getting hurt in the minors.

Napoli sustained a torn right anterior cruciate ligament earlier this week while playing for Class AAA Columbus.

The Indians signed the 36-year-old Napoli to a minor-league deal this winter and brought him to training camp. But Cleveland didn’t have a roster spot for him after signing first baseman Yonder Alonso as a free agent.
