Fleetwood Mac coming to Bucks’ new arena

- Piet Levy

The Milwaukee Bucks’ forthcoming, $524 million arena is hosting three of rock history’s biggest bands in October: Metallica, Foo Fighters and the Eagles.

Now, it’s hosting a fourth that month: Fleetwood Mac.

The band behind one of rock history’s best and bestselling albums, 1977’s “Rumours,” along with classic rock songs like “Landslide” and “Rhiannon,” will play the tentatively titled Wisconsin Entertainment and Sports Center Oct. 28.

Fleetwood Mac’s last Milwaukee show, at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in 2015, was that soon-to-be-demolished arena’s highest-grossing concert in 10 years. The long-absent Christine McVie rejoined the classic lineup for that tour, playing alongside Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. At that Milwaukee show, Buckingham predicted it was the beginning of “a profound, poetic and, I believe, prolific new chapter.”

But for its Milwaukee return, Buckingham won’t be there. The band, as well known for its tumultuous drama as its tunes, parted ways with Buckingham earlier this month. No reason was given.

Buckingham was an instrumental part of the band’s success, joining the group with then-girlfriend Nicks in 1974, and serving as the band’s lead guitarist, frequent frontman and occasional songwriter for most of the decades since, writing and leading such songs as “Go Your Own Way” and “Tusk.” He previously had been away from the band from 1987 to 1996.

Buckingham is being replaced by two people: Mike Campbell, the leading guitarist for the late Tom Petty’s band the Heartbreakers; and Neil Finn of Crowded House fame.

Tickets, priced between $149.50 and $299.50, are available at 10 a.m. May 4 by calling (800) 745-3000 or (866) 448-7849, or visiting ticketmaster.com.

Being constructed with $250 million in public money, the arena is designed to lure acts and promoters.

This week, Bucks co-owner Wes Edens told the Journal Sentinel that a naming rights deal was “imminent,” with a local company with a national reach.

The new arena will open in late summer or early September.
