Showalter, Menomonee Falls have parted ways

- Mark Stewart

The Steve Showalter era is over at Menomonee Falls.

The school district announced Friday evening that the two sides had mutually agreed to part ways after two seasons.

Showalter went 28-21 as the school’s boys basketball coach. Falls was 11-13 this past season. The team’s 5-11 record in the Greater Metro Conference was good for seventh out of nine teams.

Year 1 was much better. Falls was 9-5 (third) in the league, went 17-8 overall and won a regional title.

Falls athletic director Ryan Anderson declined additional comment. Showalter said a difference in coaching philosophy led to the mutual decision for him to leave the program.

A news release sent to families in the program said the school hopes to have a new coach in place by the end of May. The release also said that Showalter resigned from his position as an educational assistant effective Saturday.

Showalter’s quiet exit comes in stark contrast to his arrival. The hire created excitement and interest in the program.

As the head coach at Germantown from 2001-’15, Showalter built the program into a powerhouse. He took the Warhawks to the state tournament six times, won state championships in 2012, ’13 and ’14 and led the Warhawks to a state runner-up finish in 2015.

He resigned from position after that year and took an assistant coaching job at Division II Lindenwood University near St. Louis. Showalter left that position after one season and returned to the area, taking the head coaching job at Catholic Memorial for a month before resigning from that job to take the position at Falls.

“I love coaching and I love being around the kids, so I’ll always keep my eyes open for something if an opportunity is there,” he said.
