Dodgers place Puig on the DL

-

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed rightfielder Yasiel Puig on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left hip pointer and bruised foot after getting hurt in the field and the plate a day earlier.

Puig was initially injured during the first game of a doubleheader Saturday when he ran hard into a padded wall near right field after making a one-handed catch in foul territory to end the first inning.

Puig stayed down for several moments and was attended to by team trainers before walking off the field. He came out to bat in the second inning, fouled a ball of his foot, then flied out.

Afterward, manager Dave Roberts said Puig’s foot was more of a concern while the Dodgers slugger didn’t seem too concerned. He sat in a chair with his left leg propped up, a small blue wrap around his foot and joked with reporters.

“It should be bruised but I can’t see it because it’s the same color as me,” Puig said.

Right-hander Brock Stewart was called up to take Puig’s roster spot.

Almost perfect: Nick Kingham accomplished something that only one major-league pitcher had achieved in the past century.

In his big league debut, Kingham carried a perfect game into the seventh inning to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. He joined Johnny Cueto in 2008 as the only pitchers in the last 100 years with one hit allowed, at least nine strikeouts and no walks in his debut.

“That’s how you plan it up, not to let anybody on,” Kingham said. “It’s incredible how it happened.

“Just kind of starting from the get-go, it went well. ... It’s corny, but it took everybody. I’m really fortunate and really happy about it.”

The 26-year-old rookie righthander retired 20 straight batters before Paul DeJong singled down the left-field line with two out in the seventh.

The home crowd responded with an ovation before Kingham retired Marcell Ozuna. The fans stood and cheered while Kingham walked off the field and waved. He finished with nine strikeouts on 98 pitches, 72 for strikes.

More than the numbers, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was pleased with Kingham’s poise.

“It was his next start. Watching him, it was just his next start,” Hurdle said. “It had to be more than that. He compartmentalized very well.”
