Packers cut Callahan after signing free agent
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers almost always navigate organized team activities, minicamp and training camp with four quarterbacks on their roster. So when general manager Brian Gutekunst agreed to terms with a fifth over the weekend, something had to give.
By Monday afternoon, Gutekunst had made the decision to release Joe Callahan, the former Division III standout who spent most of the last two seasons in Green Bay. The Packers announced the move in a news release.
Callahan’s roster spot now belongs to former Eastern Kentucky quarterback Tim Boyle, an undrafted free agent who signed with the team Sunday afternoon. Boyle spent three seasons at Connecticut, where he became the first true freshman starter in program history, before transferring to Eastern Kentucky for his final season of eligibility. He completed 61.5% of his passes for 2,134 yards and 11 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in 2017.
Boyle joins fellow quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Brett Hundley and DeShone Kizer on the 90-man roster, which remains a work in progress.
Callahan made the team as an undrafted free agent in 2016 after a stellar career at Wesley College in Delaware. He spent several weeks with both the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns later that year after the Packers released him before returning to Green Bay as a member of the practice squad on Dec. 2, 2016.
The Packers brought Callahan to training camp again in 2017 and kept him on the practice squad for the first six weeks of the regular season. He spent the remainder of the year on the active roster and played sparingly in the finale against the Detroit Lions. Callahan completed five of seven passes for 11 yards in his only regular-season action.
