- Mark Stewart Milwaukee Journal Sentinel USA TODAY NETWORK - WISCONSIN

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Abby Matthews, Franklin: The Sabers are doing a lot of good things this season, and Matthews, a sophomore outfielder, is part of the reason. Last week she hit .429 (9 for 21) to help the team win five of seven games. That included the two grand slams she hit in a 10-4 victory over Kenosha Indian Trail last Tuesday. She finished that day 3 for 3 at the plate with nine RBI. For the week she smashed four home runs, scored eight runs and had 14 RBI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Kewaskum: The defending East Central champion mowed down three ranked teams last week. It swept a doubleheader from Campbellsport, the fifthranked team in Division 3 in the latest state coaches poll, April 23. The Indians knocked off Whitnall, the 10thranked team in Division 2, and Mosinee, which is ranked ninth in that division, on Saturday. Junior Kennedy Lehn played a large role, posting a 0.42 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 33 innings. Junior infielder Maggie Geidel went 3 for 3 against Whitnall and senior Megan Marx drove in three runs in that game.

COMING UP

Wilmot at Westosha Central, 4:30 p.m.

Tuesday: Wilmot scored runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to knock off the Falcons last week. A win Tuesday will put Westosha Central’s streak of six straight Southern Lakes titles in serious jeopardy.

Franklin at Kenosha Bradford, 4:30

p.m. Wednesday: Oak Creek has emerged as the team to beat in the Southeast again. The winner of this matchup takes hold of second place. The week sets up nicely for Bradford, which, with a win, would springboard into a home-field showdown with Oak Creek on Thursday.

Greenfield at Menomonee Falls, 10

a.m. Saturday: A non-conference matchup of top-10 area teams is on tap.

Cudahy Blast, 8:30 a.m. Saturday: The host Packers and Wauwatosa East are the teams to watch in this six-team field. Poynette Jamboree, 9 a.m. Saturday: Burlington, Elkhorn, Whitnall, Wilmot, Westosha Central and Oak Creek are some off the top teams to take the field in this showcase event.
