NATION BRIEFING New Starbucks policy: Purchase isn’t required to sit in its cafes
Reggie Lucas, who worked with Miles Davis and Madonna, dies
NEW YORK – Reggie Lucas, the Grammy-winning musician who played with Miles Davis in the 1970s and produced the bulk of Madonna’s debut album, has died. He was 65.
The performer’s daughter, Lisa Lucas, told The Associated Press that her father died from complications with his heart early Saturday in New York City.
“After a long and arduous struggle with his physical heart (his emotional one was perfect) he was called home. I wish he’d had more time, I wish we’d all had more time with him, but he left this world absolutely covered in love, with his hands held and his family beside him. I’m glad he’s at peace now,” Lisa Lucas wrote on her Facebook page.
Lucas was born Feb. 25, 1953, in the Queens borough of New York City.
After playing with Davis in the ’70s, Lucas began a musical partnership with percussionist James Mtume.
Trapped rural Hawaiians rescued as lava speeds up
Air quality has diminished in Hawaiian neighborhoods as molten lava from the Kilauea volcano sped up Saturday on an unpredictable path with no clear signs of stopping.
So far, 22 vents have opened over the two weeks since lava started flowing into neighborhoods in the southern area of the Big Island.
Lava from one vent near the Leilani Estates subdivision was advancing at 300 to 400 yards per hour early Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The vent has diminished air quality in parts of the Puna district in the southeast corner of the island because of plumes of poisonous gases emitted from the lava and burning vegetation. A new explosion was reported late Friday that sent ash rocketing up 10,000 feet in the air.
The volcano is far enough from homes and businesses that ash has had little effect on life on Hawaii’s Big Island.
The unpredictable path of lava led to one stream crossing a street and threatening a new area east of Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens, where 40 structures, including 26 homes, have been destroyed over the last two weeks.
Melania Trump comes home from hospital, ‘in high spirits’
First lady Melania Trump returned to the White House on Saturday, but said nothing more about why she spent more than five days in the hospital for an unspecified kidney problem.
The East Wing said Saturday morning that Trump was back in the White House family quarters. “The First Lady returned home to the White House this morning,” the statement said. “She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits.”
Trump was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Monday for an unspecified embolization to treat a benign kidney condition.
NEW YORK – Starbucks is announcing a new policy that allows anyone to sit in its cafes or use its restrooms, even if they don’t buy anything.
The new policy comes five weeks after two black men who hadn’t bought anything were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks.
Starbucks said Saturday it has told workers to consider anyone who enters its stores a customer, “regardless of whether they make a purchase.” The company noted workers should still call the police if someone is considered a safety threat.
