Admirals’ GM named

The Nashville Predators named Scott Nichol as general manager and director of player developmen­t of the Milwaukee Admirals on Tuesday.

Nichol will work closely with Predators assistant director of player developmen­t Wade Redden in following, evaluating and assisting prospects drafted by Nashville.

During Nichol’s five seasons of guidance in his player developmen­t role in Milwaukee, he has helped players such as Filip Forsberg, Kevin Fiala, Viktor Arvidsson, Colton Sissons, Austin Watson, Miikka Salomaki and Anthony Bitetto secure full-time spots in the NHL.

GOLF

Europe is adding a wealth of Ryder Cup experience for the team room with four more assistants to captain Thomas Bjorn.

Lee Westwood, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell are the latest additions to Bjorn’s staff for this year’s matches in France. Bjorn previously had named Robert Karlsson as one of his vice captains.

Westwood played in every Ryder Cup since making his debut in 1997 and was on seven winning teams. Harrington has played on six teams, while Donald has played on four Ryder Cup teams, all of them European victories. McDowell cemented his Ryder Cup legacy with the winning point in 2010 at Wales. McDowell has played on four teams.

U.S. captain Jim Furyk has Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker of Madison and Davis Love III as assistants.

NBA

Philadelph­ia’s Ben Simmons and Utah’s Donovan Mitchell were unanimous selections to the NBA’s All-Rookie team.

The two guards received all 100 first-place votes from a panel of sports writers and broadcaste­rs. Both players helped their teams reach the second round of the playoffs.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum also was selected to the first team, falling one vote short of unanimous. Simmons, Mitchell and Tatum are the three finalists for the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Kyle Kuzma (93 first-team votes) and Chicago’s Lauri Markkanen (76) rounded out the first team.

The second team was guards Dennis Smith Jr. of Dallas and Lonzo Ball of the Lakers, Atlanta forward John Collins, Sacramento guard Bogdan Bogdanovic and Phoenix forward Josh Jackson.

HOCKEY

Longtime NHL executive Lou Lamoriello has joined the New York Islanders and will have full authority in all hockey matters.

The team announced the hiring of the 75-yearold Lamoriello as president of hockey operations. He comes to a team that has missed the playoffs eight of the last 12 seasons.

Lamoriello spent the past three seasons as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

BASEBALL

The New York Mets signed free agent Jose Bautista, getting the former home run champion two days after he was cut by the Atlanta Braves.

New York listed Bautista as an outfielder. He played only third base in his short stint with Atlanta, starting at the spot eight times. He hit .143 (5 for 35) with two home runs and five RBI, and fared well against left-handed pitchers.

The 37-year-old Bautista signed for the $545,000 major-league minimum.

Astros cut former top prospect: The Houston Astros have released former top prospect Jon Singleton, who was serving a 100-game suspension under baseball’s minor-league drug program after a third positive test for a drug of abuse.

The 26-year-old first baseman played 114 games for Houston in 2014-’15, hitting .171 with 14 home runs. Singleton spent all of last season with Class AA Corpus Christi, where he batted .205 with 18 homers and 62 RBI.
