Love will miss Game 7

-

Kevin Love won’t be able to help LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 7 against the Boston Celtics.

Love was placed in the NBA’s concussion protocol and the all-star forward will miss Sunday’s series finale of the Eastern Conference finals, a personal blow and yet another challenge for Cleveland to overcome.

The Cavaliers said Love experienced concussion-like symptoms Saturday before the team’s flight to Boston. Moments before the Cavs sent a news release updating Love’s status, coach Tyronn Lue said the 29-year-old, who inadvertently bashed heads with Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum on Friday, was still being evaluated and there was a possibility he could play.

However, like everything else in this erratic, convoluted season for Cleveland, things changed.

TRACK AND FIELD

The University of Wisconsin women’s 400-meter relay team punched their ticket to the Big Dance thanks to a strong showing in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships on Saturday in Sacramento, Calif.

Meagan Blair, Gabby DesRosiers, Brenna Detra and Ebony McClendon took eighth in 44.66 seconds to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 6-9 in Eugene, Ore. They are the first 400-meter women’s relay team in school history to make it to the NCAA meet. Oregon won in 43.32.

Detra also advanced in the 400-meter hurdles. In addition, UW’s Taylor Amann (pole vault) and Banki Oginni (shot put) will head to the NCAA meet.

Ollie Hoare took second in his 1,500-meter section and will also pack his bags for Eugene. Hoare had a time of 3 minutes, 43.13 seconds. Oregon’s Sam Prakel won in 3:42.77.

AUTO RACING

Daniel Ricciardo took a dominant pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix , softening the blow for Red Bull after his teammate Max Verstappen failed to even start qualifying, having earlier crashed in final practice.

Ricciardo topped all three sections of qualifying, setting a lap record in the process for only his second career pole. The other was also in Monaco, two years ago.

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel qualifed second ahead of championship leader Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes. In a further boost for Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen qualified fourth ahead of Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.

HORSE RACING

Gronkowski completed his first official workout since arriving in the United States ahead of his expected start in the Belmont Stakes.

The colt breezed four furlongs in 47.99 seconds at Belmont Park for Chad Brown, who has taken over training duties from Europe-based Jeremy Noseda.

Gronkowski has been in the U.S. a couple of weeks. The colt, named for New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, has four wins in six starts in Britain. The human Gronkowski has purchased an interest in the colt that missed the Kentucky Derby because of a slight infection.

TENNIS

Third-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won the Strasbourg International after laboring to a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (6) win against Dominika Cibulkova.

They spent 3 hours, 35 minutes on the French court in a grueling contest, which ended when Pavlyuchenkova sealed victory on her second serve.

Pavlyuchenkova won her first title of the year and 12th overall, beating Cibulkova for the fourth time in their 11 career meetings.
