Brookfield Academy's Dale wins tennis title

- Mark Stewart

Victory did not elude Pablo Dale this time.

The Brookfield Academy sophomore avenged his only loss of the season with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over two-time defending champion Casey Johnson of Kohler in the Division 2 final of the WIAA individual state tournament Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

Johnson, a senior who finished the year 23-1, defeated Dale, 7-5, 7-5, on May 12.

The victory allowed Dale to finish 21-1 and join Tim Smyczek (2002) and Tim Prudlow (2003) as the school’s only WIAA state champions.

Dale’s victory was part of a Division 2 sweep for Brookfield Academy.

Its doubles team of senior Liam Matthews and freshman Tayte Matthews defeated Appleton Xavier seniors David Horak and Konnor Barth, 6-0, 6-0, to finish the season 23-2.

Seeded third in the field, Matthews and Matthews handed No. 2 seed Parker Chrisler, a senior, and Kelby Mack, a sophomore, a 7-5, 6-4 loss that was their first setback of the season.

Division 1: Marquette’s team of seniors Noah Guillermo and Rob May defeated Nicolet senior Eli Winter and sophomore Ridley Aranda, 6-3, 6-2, to give the school its second straight doubles crown. They finished 24-3.

In singles, Madison Memorial senior Colt Tegtmeier defeated Oshkosh West senior Neel Raut, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.
