Nationals’ Strasburg headed to the DL

-

Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg will go on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, manager Dave Martinez said after the Nationals’ 7-5 victory over San Francisco on Saturday.

Martinez said there was no timetable on Strasburg’s return. The right-hander left his start Friday against San Francisco after two innings and underwent an MRI Saturday morning.

“I thought just the inflammation was a good thing and nothing else was wrong structurally,” Martinez said. “So as soon as we can get that to calm down a little bit and get him throwing a little bit, we’ll be fine.”

The three-time all-star is 6-6 with a 3.46 ERA in 13 starts this year. It is Strasburg’s sixth stint on the disabled list in the past four seasons.

Strasburg is the second Washington starting pitcher to go on the disabled list this week. Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson was placed on the DL on Tuesday with a right hamstring strain.

Tebow optimistic: Tim Tebow isn’t ready to give up on his dream of making it to the major leagues - yet.

He’s batting .245 with four home runs, 21 RBI and has 71 strikeouts, second most in the Eastern League, while playing left field for the New York Mets’ Class AA affiliate.

And Friday night, before going 1 for 3 with a double and a strikeout, the 30-year-old said, “I’ve always believed in myself, so I’m not going to stop now.”

But at some point, Tebow said, he may have to consider a timetable for making it to the big leagues, at which point he would quit playing.

“I think that it’s something I’ll have to figure out, pray about it, and see where my heart’s at with everything,” he said. “It’s hard to necessarily put a timetable on a dream or ambitions or heart, so I think it’s just looking at it, praying about it and figuring out what’s best.”

He didn’t sound like he thinks he’s ready for the big leagues now.

“I don’t know, I think I’m improving every day,” Tebow said. “I still think there’s still a lot of things that I know I will improve on and know I can improve on and I’m making those strides every day. So I think every game, every series I’m improving and I want to keep making those strides.’’

Tanaka on DL: Masahiro Tanaka was put on the 10-day disabled list by the New York Yankees, a day after the pitcher strained both hamstrings running the bases against the Mets.

A 29-year-old right-hander in his fifth big league season, Tanaka is 7-2 with a 4.58 ERA in 13 starts. Tanaka missed a turn in September 2015.
