Marquette defends title

- Mark Stewart

Marquette’s seniors made it a clean sweep.

The Hilltoppers boys tennis team won its fourth straight WIAA Division 1 state championship Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, and as the Hilltoppers have often done, they won in convincing fashion.

Their 6-1 victory over Brookfield East in the final was preceded by a 7-0 victory over Badger in the quarterfinals Friday and a 7-0 victory over Verona in the semifinals Saturday morning.

Brookfield East advanced to the final with a 4-3 win over Arrowhead in the semifinals earlier Saturday.

Senior Noah Guillermo and Nick Yang had a role in the lineup for each of those finals wins for Marquette.

Rob May, the team’s other senior, was in the lineup the past three years though he is also a four-year member of the varsity.

This year the three were in charge of a squad that had a number of new players or players being used in different positions.

“They just have a tremendous record and are really, really good leaders, good teammates and they’ve done a very good job of being role models for everyone on the team,” Marquette coach David Frank said.

Marquette’s dominance at state this year wasn’t just confined to the final score of each dual, but it came within each individual match as well.

With the exception of the loss to Brookfield East at No. 3 singles Saturday, the Hilltoppers won each match in straight sets. In fact only one of their other wins during the two-day event went three sets.

Yang provided possibly the biggest victory with a straight set win over Verona junior Will Tennison, who was the No. 1 for the individual state tournament that finished last weekend.
