U.S. Supreme Court denies Dassey’s appeal

WASHINGTON - In a crushing blow to Brendan Dassey, the U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday it will not hear his appeal in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach.

No explanation was given for the decision. Four of the nine Supreme Court justices must agree to accept a case.

Dassey, who was featured in the Netflix docu-series “Making a Murderer,” sought review by the Supreme Court after lower courts overturned, then reinstated, his conviction. At the heart of this case was his confession — and heated debate over whether it was voluntary or coerced by investigators.

Sauk County elk tests positive for CWD

MADISON – Wisconsin agriculture officials have quarantined a Sauk County breeding farm after a captive elk tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced the quarantine in a news release Monday. The elk was a 5-year-old cow that died while giving birth and the National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed the animal was infected, the release said.

The release didn’t say when the elk died or when the lab confirmed the infection. The release said the farm is fenced and has 15 elk but didn’t name the facility. The agency is investigating how the animal contracted the disease.

The quarantine means no animals can leave or move into the farm.

Health alert: Bleeding from synthetic pot rising

Health officials issued an alert Monday warning residents that the number of cases of severe bleeding linked to use of the synthetic marijuana product K2 has risen rapidly in Milwaukee.

The City of Milwaukee Health Department reports that there are 27 cases, confirmed and probable, of severe bleeding from synthetic cannabinoid use. Seventeen of those cases occurred in the last five days.

Rat poison has been found in synthetics around Milwaukee. In addition to bleeding, the drugs can cause unexplained bruising and possibly death.

Ingredients in the synthetic drug keep blood from clotting, said Angie Hagy, director of Disease Control and Environmental Health for the city.

“This is why bleeding and bruising can occur. It is important to seek medical attention right away,” Hagy said.

The news comes just over two months after another public health alert was issued, when two people in Milwaukee were hospitalized from K2 use. At that time, those were the only two confirmed cases in the city.

“I urge everyone in the community to steer clear of these products,” Commissioner of Health Patricia McManus said. “They are unpredictable and they are not safe. Parents, please talk to your children about these products.”
