Trump, Big Bang, Summerfest converge Wednesday night
Wednesday night in Milwaukee will be filled with music, fireworks and President Donald Trump.
Trump is due to arrive at the 128th Air Refueling Wing near Mitchell International Airport on Wednesday night, just as Summerfest’s opening day is kicking into high gear.
Trump is coming to Milwaukee from an earlier speech in Fargo, North Dakota.
On Thursday, Trump will preside at the groundbreaking at Foxconn Technology Group in Racine.
“The show is definitely going to go on, and it’s going to be a great show,” Summerfest President and CEO Don Smiley said of the unusual scheduling.
Summerfest fireworks are due to run Wednesday from 9:30 to 10 p.m., with headliners then hitting the stages.
For the fireworks, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office will close the I-794 northbound lanes of the Hoan Bridge at Carferry Drive at 8 p.m.
All lanes of traffic, northbound and southbound on the bridge, will be closed during the fireworks and reopen following the display at approximately 10:30 p.m.
Drivers heading home from the fireworks and Maier Festival Park could face detours related to the presidential visit.
Ald. Bob Bauman criticized the president for his Wednesday-night arrival and associated cost for the city.
“This visit is purely political, allowing the president to attend a fundraiser and then take part in a PR event for the future Foxconn operation in Racine County,” he said. “This visit will cost city taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars in police and DPW overtime and operations, and not one penny is reimbursed by the federal government.”
