Arrowhead retains its place at the top

- Mark Stewart

It took a strong spring, but Arrowhead's streak continues.

The Warhawks have won the Journal Sentinel's school of the year competition every year since its inception. To extend the streak to 17 years, the school received an excellent spring from its boys sports.

Arrowhead finished with 28 points, five better than Marquette. Ten of those points came in the spring when the school had state runner-up finishes in baseball and boys golf, a fourth-place finish at state track and state semifinal appearance in boys

tennis.

Schools earned points for the performances of their teams in WIAA tournaments. They received five points for a state championship and three for a second-place finish. Two points were given for reaching the state semifinals or for a third- or fourth-place finish. One point was given for reaching the state quarterfinals or a fifth- through eighth-place finish.

For summer baseball, the 2017 results were used.

Marquette won the boys title for the fourth straight year. Arrowhead was the girls champion.

Here is a look at the top of the boys and girls standings and then a closer look at the overall top 10.

Boys: 1. Marquette, 23; 2. Arrowhead, 15; 3. Brookfield East, 10; 4 Whitefish Bay, 7; 5 (tie). Brookfield Central, Muskego, Prairie School, Waukesha West, 6.

Girls: 1. Arrowhead 13; 2. Muskego, 12; 3 (tie). Catholic Memorial and Burlington, 10; 5. Whitefish Bay, 9.

Arrowhead (28 points)

The Warhawks' lone state title this year came from the girls golf team, which won its second straight title in dominating fashion. What is impressive about the Warhawks this year, and most years, is the widespread nature of their success. The school scored in 12 of the 23 WIAA-sponsored sports.

Marquette (23 points)

Considering Marquette is a boysonly school, its point total is especially impressive. The Hilltoppers won state titles in soccer, volleyball, golf and tennis, sports in which it is no stranger to success. .

Muskego (18 points)

It was business as usual in some respects for the Warriors. Junior Elizabeth Missiaen led the Franklin Combined gymnastics team, which also included students from Muskego and Oak Creek, to its third straight Division 1 state title. It was a breakthrough year in other sports. Girls cross country posted its best-ever state finish (third), the boys track team finished third and the football team reached the state semifinals.

Whitefish Bay (16 points)

Soccer reigned supreme this year for the Blue Dukes with the boys team winning its third straight Division 2 state title, climbing to the No. 2 ranking nationally. The girls soccer team, meanwhile, reached the sectional final and gave eventual champion Brookfield Central its toughest postseason match. Gymnastics won its third straight crown

Catholic Memorial (15 points)

There were no championships this year for the Crusaders, but it was still a good year across the board. They scored in nine sports, reaching the state final in girls soccer and posting a third straight top four finish at the state track and field meet.

Brookfield Central (13 points)

The Lancers girls soccer team spent the bulk of the season owning the state's No. 1 overall rankings and they finished the year ranked No. 16 in the country. The football team came close to winning the title but fell, 14-13, to Waunakee.

Burlington (13 points)

Big years for girls volleyball and softball propelled the Demons into the top 10. Girls volleyball finished second to Waterford in the Southern Lakes but then won the Division 1 state title. Softball, meanwhile, won the Southern Lakes title and reached the final at state.

Waukesha West (13 points)

The Wolverines were built for speed this year. In the fall they finished fifth at the state girls cross country meet and in the spring won their first state track and field title since 2006.

Brookfield East (12 points)

The Spartans nearly reached the top of the mountain in basketball by advanced to the Division 1 state final. The Spartans boys tennis team also reached the final of the state team tournament.

Oak Creek (12 points)

With the help of junior Holli Anderson, the Franklin Combined gymnastics team won the state title. The Knights also had big seasons in boys track and field, girls basketball and softball.

?? MARK STEWART / JOURNAL SENTINEL ?? The girls golf team gave Arrowhead its only state title this year, but the Warhawks also had high marks in other sports.
