Machado talks hit snag

- Todd Rosiak

The Baltimore Orioles continue to shop shortstop Manny Machado, and according to reports the Milwaukee Brewers remain in the hunt for the allstar’s services.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic said that the Orioles are seeking right-hander Corbin Burnes in a potential deal, with the Brewers being unwilling to part with him and instead offering outfielder Brett Phillips and righthander Luis Ortiz as the key pieces.

Burnes was recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs on Sunday but hadn’t pitched in either of his first two games in a Brewers uniform. He went 2-4 with a 5.15 earned run average in 19 games, but his numbers were skewed both by pitching roughly half the time at altitude and also by his mid-season switch from starting to relief.

Phillips, who’s spent most of the season at Colorado Springs, is hitting just .241 with four home runs and 21 runs batted in over 68 games with the Sky Sox. He made a favorable impression during multiple stints with the Brewers last season.

Phillips also had two brief runs with the Brewers earlier this season.

Ortiz, who’s been pitching at Class AA Biloxi since the Brewers acquired him in the deadline-day trade of Jonathan Lucroy and Jeremy Jeffress in 2016, was named Tuesday as an injury replacement for Team USA in the AllStar Futures Game.

But he’s also battled numerous lower-body injuries during his tenure with the organization, including this season, and is only 1-4 with a 4.41 ERA in 12 appearances for the Shuckers.

As a rule, general manager David Stearns doesn’t comment on trade rumors.

Aguilar leads Final Vote: The Brewers were doing all they could behind the scenes to try and get slugging first baseman Jesús Aguilar into the All-Star Game.

From T-shirts to signs in the dugout to a massive social-media blitz, the team’s “We Believe In Jesús” campaign had helped get Aguilar into the lead on Tuesday in the All-Star Final Vote.

Behind Aguilar in the National League were two other first basemen — Brandon Belt of the San Francisco Giants and Max Muncy of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Voting wraps up at 3 p.m. Milwaukee time on Wednesday.
