Officer slain near Boston shot with own weapon

Police shot and killed a man Sunday suspected of shooting and wounding three Kansas City, Missouri, police officers, authorities said.

The suspect died Sunday afternoon after barricading himself in a house in the southeast part of the city. He emerged from the home and was killed in an exchange of gunfire, police Chief Rick Smith told reporters.

All three officers are expected to live. The incident occurred on an unusually violent weekend for police officers, with one killed in Massachusetts along with a bystander.

In Chicago, police and protesters skirmished after a 37-year-old man was killed by an officer.

In Kansas City, police spokesman Sgt. Jacob Becchina said the first two officers were shot during an undercover operation at a motel less than 2 miles from Kauffman Stadium, where the Kansas City Royals play. The suspect then fled in a vehicle with another person, who was arrested when officers found the vehicle.

The suspect barricaded himself inside a home about a mile from the motel. He shot the third officer in the arm during the standoff, Smith said.

The suspect was a person of interest in the fatal shooting of a University of Missouri-Kansas City student during a robbery earlier this month.

“We’ve been looking for him all week,” Smith said. “This is the first time we laid eyes on him.”

In Massachusetts, a police officer and bystander died Sunday from wounds sustained when a suspect allegedly took the officer’s gun and fired following a vehicle crash and a foot chase.

Weymouth officer Michael Chesna was shot multiple times by his own firearm around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and died from the injuries at South Shore Hospital, officials said.

An unidentified elderly woman in a nearby home was killed by a stray bullet during a chase, authorities said.

Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes said the shooting suspect, 20year-old Emanuel Lopes, was in custody.

Police said the suspect crashed a car, fled the scene, and was later discovered by Chesna allegedly vandalizing a home.

Prosecutors say he attacked Chesna with a rock to the head. Chesna fell to the ground, and officials say that Lopes took the officer’s gun and shot Chesna multiple times in the head and chest.

Lopes then fled and fired more shots during a chase. Police say one of those shots fatally struck the woman in her home.

Chicago: Video shows victim was armed

Video released from an officer’s body-worn camera shows a black man killed by Chicago police had a gun in a holster at his hip and was running away and reaching toward his waist when he was shot multiple times.

Police released the 30-second clip without sound Sunday, a day after Harith Augustus, 37, was killed in a shooting that set off violent protests.

The video shows four officers approaching Augustus. An officer points to Augustus’ waist and he backs away. Three officers try to grab his arms and he tries to get away, backing into a police cruiser as his shirt flies up and shows the gun.
