French rider wins in Tour

Julian Alaphilipp­e claimed the first mountain leg of this Tour de France on Tuesday, while Greg Van Avermaet kept the overall lead for a seventh consecutiv­e day.

Alaphilipp­e, a French rider for Quick-Step, won the 98.5-mile ride from Lake Annecy that included climbs over four major Alpine passes before a descent to Le Grand-Bornand in around 41⁄ hours.

2 Olympic champion Van Avermaet got into an early breakaway and held on to increase his lead over Geraint Thomas, a Sky teammate of defending champion Chris Froome, to 2 minutes 22 seconds.

Froome is 3:21 behind Van Avermaet after recovering from a punctured tire atop the second of the stage’s ascents, finishing with Thomas and most of the top contenders.

BASKETBALL

Elizabeth Cambage scored a WNBA singlegame record 53 points to help the host Dallas Wings beat the New York Liberty, 104-87, on Tuesday.

Cambage reached 50 points on a three-point play with 2:19 remaining and broke Riquna Williams’ WNBA record of 51 points, set Sept. 8, 2013, on a wide-open three-pointer from the top of the key.

Cambage was 17 of 22 from the field with 10 rebounds and five blocks for her ninth double-double of the season. She made 15 of 16 free throws and outscored the Liberty’s starting lineup by 10 points.

Grizzlies, Kings swing deal: The Memphis Grizzlies acquired guard Garrett Temple from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for guard Ben McLemore, center Deyonta Davis, a future secondroun­d pick and cash considerat­ions.

Temple, 32, scored a career-high 8.4 points per game this past season. The 6-foot-6 guard also averaged 2.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 24.8 minutes. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks in 2011.

Davis, 21, averaged 5.8 points, 4 rebounds and 15.2 minutes for Memphis this past season.

Kerr rewarded: Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr received a contract extension following the franchise’s repeat championsh­ip and third title in four years during his tenure.

Kerr and general manager Bob Myers, who are close friends and colleagues, said when the season ended that something would get done quickly once they began formal discussion­s. Kerr had one year remaining on his original $25 million, five-year contract. Details of the extension were not announced.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Gabe Rivera, the overpoweri­ng “Senor Sack” lineman for Texas Tech who was paralyzed in a car accident while a Pittsburgh Steelers rookie, has died. He was 57.

The university confirmed Rivera’s death. He had been living in San Antonio with his wife, Nancy, who said her husband had taken ill last week and died Monday night.

Rivera, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, played at Texas Tech from 1979-’82 and was an All-American defensive lineman. He had five sacks and 62 tackles as a senior in 1982.

He was selected 21st overall by Pittsburgh in the 1983 NFL draft. He had two sacks in his first six games, but in October of that year he was in an automobile accident that left him a paraplegic. He was intoxicate­d when his car collided with another vehicle.

HOCKEY

The Milwaukee Admirals signed longtime Grand Rapids Griffins goaltender Tom McCollum.

McCollum, 28, has played most of the past nine seasons with the Griffins and has compiled a American Hockey League record of 135-107-13, a 2.72 goals-against average and .908 save percentage in 281 regular-season games. He has three games of NHL experience, all with Detroit.

Against the Admirals, McCollum is 13-5-2 lifetime with a 2.14 goals-against average and last season allowed just eight goals in five games while going 4-0-1.
