Bail set at $1.5 million in killing of police officer
The 30-year-old man charged with killing Milwaukee Police Officer Michael J. Michalski was ordered held on $1.5 million bail Tuesday.
Jonathan Copeland Jr. appeared in court on charges of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide for allegedly shooting at Officer Travis Jung and Detective Jason Rodriguez.
District Attorney John Chisholm, who is prosecuting the case, cited the seriousness of the charges and public safety in arguing for the high bail.
Copeland is due back in court Aug. 9 for a preliminary hearing.
Officers were looking for Copeland on drug and domestic violence offenses last week when the shooting occurred.
Copeland hid in a pile of clothes at the top of a staircase and ambushed Michalski as he came upstairs, shooting the veteran officer in the head, according to a criminal complaint.
Funeral services for Michalski will take place Wednesday at Oak Creek Assembly of God, 7311 S. 13th St. in Oak Creek. Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the service will begin.
The procession will start about 5 p.m. and travel from Oak Creek to Brookfield along I-94/43 north and then I-94 westbound.
