Driver speeding 99 mph says he was late for soccer game

A man stopped for driving 99 mph in a 55-mph zone said he was speeding because he was late to a soccer game.

The 26-year-old man was stopped on I-94 southbound in Oak Creek by a sheriff ’s deputy working the speed saturation patrol shortly after 8 p.m. Monday.

When asked why he was going at such a high rate of speed, the man said he was running late for a soccer game. He did not have a valid driver’s license and was cited for operating after suspension and speeding 44 mph over the limit.

“This driver’s selfish and reckless behavior put other motorists on the freeway at risk, when he shouldn’t have been in the driver’s seat at all as a suspended driver,” Acting Sheriff Richard Schmidt said in a statement.

Car driver arrested after train hits vehicle on tracks in Caledonia

The driver whose car was parked on railroad tracks and struck by an Amtrak train has been arrested, Caledonia police said.

No one was injured when a northbound train crashed into the car Tuesday night, the Caledonia Police Department said.

The driver fled before the arrival of police, who were told that the driver may have been intoxicated. The driver was arrested Wednesday and the case referred to the Racine County District Attorney’s Office.

While attempting to leave The Depot Tavern parking lot, the driver drove onto the tracks and got stuck, police said. Rather than calling 911, the driver and some bar patrons attempted to move the vehicle off the tracks. They abandoned their efforts and ran away as an Amtrak passenger train approached.

The collision disabled the train engines. Buses were sent to transport the passengers.

Anyone whose vehicle is stuck on railroad tracks should call 911 immediately, police said. The dispatch center is equipped to contact the correct railroad company and have trains stopped. A train striking a vehicle could possibly derail, injuring or killing many people in the process, police said.
