Muhammad, Bucks are working on deal for camp

- Matt Velazquez

Shabazz Muhammad came to Milwaukee this spring looking for a chance to rejuvenate his career. Now, the 25year-old wing is close to returning to the Bucks for a shot at earning a spot on their 2018-’19 roster.

The Bucks and Muhammad are working on a deal that would bring the 6-foot-6, free-agent wing back to the team to compete for a roster spot, a source told the Journal Sentinel on Monday night.

Milwaukee’s roster includes 14 players on guaranteed contracts. Center Tyler Zeller remains with the team on a non-guaranteed deal. Additionally, Travis Trice, Brandon McCoy and Jordan Barnett have signed training-camp contracts.

NBA teams can hold as many as 20 players during training camp before the roster is trimmed to 15 for the regular season.

Muhammad’s contract likely will be for camp, but he could potentially fill the team’s final roster spot should the Bucks decide he’s a better fit than Zeller.

There’s a chance that could happen considering it would be unusual for the Bucks to start the season with four centers — Zeller, Brook Lopez, John Henson and Thon Maker — but Muhammad will have to prove he deserves the spot over another member of the camp roster or free agent.

The 14th pick in the 2013 draft, Muhammad joined the Bucks on March 4 after being let go by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He made a limited but noticeable impact during 11 regular-season games with the Bucks, providing instant offense off the bench to the tune of 8.5 points in 10.6 minutes per contest while shooting 55.2 percent and making 3 of 8 three-pointers.
