Michaels is hit by lightning

-

Popular Wisconsin talk radio host Bill Michaels, whose late morning and early afternoon sports program is carried on stations all over Wisconsin, was struck by lightning Thursday in Eau Claire, an encounter detailed in a Facebook post by his wife, Sherry. The post indicated he was treated locally and released.

Michaels, whose “Bill Michaels Show” runs 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is based on FM-105.7 The Fan in Hales Corners, had traveled to Eau Claire and was hosting his show remotely when his signal went dead mid-sentence in the first hour of his program.

Michaels had been hosting from a patio at Wild Ridge & Mill Run Golf Course when a small cell of thunderstorms moved into the area just as Michaels had finished an interview with newly minted Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer.

“It jolted me, I guess, is the best way to put it,” Michaels said. “It burned my arms, burned my fingers and found out later it had blown out through my shoe.” JR Radcliffe GYMNASTICS

Sam Mikulak soared to his fifth U.S. gymnastics title Saturday in Boston, rebounding from a sluggish performance in the opening round to leave little doubt that he’s fully recovered from an Achilles injury 18 months ago.

The two-time Olympian finished with the top scores on floor exercise, high bar and parallel bars while posting a two-day total of 172.900 to become the sixth man to win five national championships and the first since Blaine Wilson ripped off five straight crowns from 1996-2000.

Defending national champion Yul Moldauer, who is battling lower-back issues, surged to second following a rocky start. Allan Bower finished third followed by Donothan Bailey, Alec Yoder and Akash Modi.

AUTO RACING

Will Power will begin his bid for a third straight IndyCar win at Pocono Raceway from the pole.

Power turned a lap of 219.511 mph in Long Pond, Pa., to take the top spot and perhaps bolster his bid for a championship with four races left in the IndyCar season.

Power won his 53rd pole and tied AJ Foyt for second on the career list.

Power and Josef Newgarden made it a 1-2 start for team owner Roger Penske.

BASEBALL

The Boston Red Sox returned ace Chris Sale to the 10-day disabled list after just one healthy start.

The left-hander was already on the DL with left shoulder inflammation once this month. He was activated against the Orioles last Sunday and struck out 12 batters in five innings. He is 12-4 with a 1.97 ERA. TRACK AND FIELD

Christian Coleman hung on to win the men’s 100 meters on his return from injury at the Birmingham Diamond League.

The 22-year-old American ran a season’s best of 9.94 seconds, holding off Britain’s Reece Prescod, who set a personal best with the same time.

Noah Lyles – the fastest man in the world this year – was third in 9.98.

Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas eased to victory in the women’s 200 as she won in 22.15 ahead of newly crowned European champion Dina Asher-Smith of Britain.
