- From Journal Sentinel wire reports

A homeless man attacked and killed a top amateur golfer from Spain who was playing a round alone near her university campus in central Iowa, leaving her body in a pond on the course, police said Tuesday.

Collin Daniel Richards, 22, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Celia Barquin Arozamena, a student at Iowa State University. He was ordered jailed Tuesday on a $5 million, cashonly bond.

Barquin was found Monday morning at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, about 30 miles north of Des Moines. Police were called to the course around 10:20 a.m. to investigate a possible missing female after golfers found a golf bag with no one around it.

Officers found Barquin’s body some distance from the bag, with several stab wounds to her upper torso, head and neck, according to the criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Barquin, the 2018 Big 12 champion and Iowa State female athlete of the year, had no known relationship with Richards.

Barquin, who was ranked No. 69 nationally by Golfweek, ended her career as a Cyclone with a fourth straight NCAA regional appearance and earned all-Big 12 honors for the third time — the second player in Iowa State’s history to do so.

TENNIS

The chair umpire who climbed out of his seat to talk with Nick Kyrgios during a U.S. Open match has been suspended for two tournaments by the ATP.

A statement issued by the men’s tour Tuesday said that Mohamed Lahyani will not officiate at his next two scheduled events, the China Open in Beijing, which starts Oct. 1, and the Shanghai Masters the following week.

The ATP said Layhani’s actions during Kyrgios’ second-round victory over Pierre-Hugues Herbert at Flushing Meadows on Aug. 30 were “deemed to have compromised the impartiality that is required of an official.”

Pan Pacific Open: Fifth-seeded Sloane Stephens was eliminated from the first round of the tournament in Tokyo by Donna Vekic, 6-4, 6-4.

The 2017 U.S. Open champion also lost to the unseeded Croat in the first round at Wimbledon.

Also, seventh-seeded Ashleigh Barty reached the second round by beating CoCo Vandeweghe, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, while No. 8 Barbora Strycova defeated Zarina Diyas, 6-4, 6-4.

The bonus pool for the PGA Tour postseason doubles next year to $70 million in a revamped system that gives a head start to top players at the Tour Championship and pays $15 million to the FedEx Cup champion.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said the changes were designed to make the FedEx Cup finale easier for fans to understand and to avoid the potential for separate winners of the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup.

The changes include a more compact schedule next season that ends Aug. 25, a week before football begins. The top 10 players in the FedEx Cup during the regular season are part of a separate $10 million bonus program that pays $2 million to the No. 1 player. The FedEx Cup playoffs are reduced from four events to three, with the winner of the Tour Championship being the FedEx Cup champion.
