Clemson QB will transfer
Clemson quarterback Kelly Bryant feels he didn’t get a fair shot to keep his job and has decided to transfer after highly touted freshman Trevor Lawrence was named the starter for the thirdranked Tigers.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced the senior’s intention to transfer Wednesday, two days after it was announced that Lawrence would start this week against Syracuse.
Bryant had started the past 18 games for the Tigers, going 16-2. He missed the past two days of practice after what Swinney said was an emotional conversation between the two on Monday.
“It was a rough day,” Swinney said. Bryant’s demotion did not sit well with the graduate student, who led Clemson to a 12-2 mark last year, a third consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference championship and College Football Playoff berth.
“I’ve been here. I’ve waited my turn. I’ve done everything y’all have asked me to do, plus more,’” Bryant told The Greenville News .
SOCCER
First it was Barcelona. Then Real Madrid. Both Spanish league leaders were stunned on Wednesday, with Barcelona losing, 2-1, at last-place Leganes and Madrid falling, 3-0, at Sevilla.
Barcelona’s loss came as Lionel Messi made his 700th appearance with the club, including 55 unofficial games. It was the second consecutive setback for the defending champion, which was coming off a home draw at Girona in the previous round.
“We lost five points in three days,” Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde said. “It’s difficult to explain.”
NHL
For the first time since Corey Perry broke into the NHL as a feisty 20-year-old in 2005, the Anaheim Ducks will be without their goal-scoring right wing for a significant amount of time.
Perry is likely to be out for five months after significantly injuring his right knee during warmups for a preseason game.
The 2011 NHL Most Valuable Player had surgery Wednesday, Ducks general manager Bob Murray said. Recovery time is typically at least 20 weeks, guaranteeing Perry will miss the bulk of a regular season for the first time in his career.
NBA
The NBA has told teams that it will have several events in the coming months designed to help improve workplace cultures, as well as find more ways to have women in leadership roles in the league.
The NBA’s memo, sent Wednesday and obtained by The Associated Press, revealed plans to hold workshops in Atlanta and Los Angeles in mid-November on diversity and inclusion efforts. An event is also planned in Charlotte, N.C., over the all-star break to expand “the pipeline of female talent in basketball operations roles.”
In a separate memo last week, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told teams that he wants to see more women hired around the league – particularly leadership and supervisory positions.
