Arrest made in shooting

An arrest has been made in the shooting death of LSU basketball player Wayde Sims.

Baton Rouge police said Saturday that 20-yearold Dyteon Simpson has been charged with second-degree murder and is at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Sims was shot early Friday during a street fight caught on video near the Southern University campus.

Police Chief Murphy Paul said at a news conference Saturday that investigat­ors concluded from the video and DNA evidence collected at the scene that a man who could be seen punching a friend of Sims shortly before the shooting was Simpson.

“Wayde stepped in to defend his friend and was shot by Simpson,” Paul said.

The department is crediting the Louisiana State Police fugitive task force, the state police crime lab, Southern University police and area citizens in assisting in the investigat­ion leading to the arrest.

BASKETBALL Diana Taurasi

scored 26 points, including hitting 5 three-pointers, to help the U.S. beat Belgium, 93-77, in the semifinals of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in San Cristobal De La Laguna, Spain.

Breanna Stewart added 20 points while Brittney Griner had 16 for the Americans, who will be trying to win a third straight gold medal at the worlds – something the country has never done.

The U.S. has won 21 consecutiv­e World Cup games and will play Australia for the title Sunday. The U.S. has won all 17 meetings between the teams, including a 10-0 mark in the World Cup.

Belgium, making its first appearance in the World Cup, was led by Emma Meesseman’s 23 points.

BASEBALL

New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia was suspended five games for hitting a Tampa Bay batter, a penalty that won’t take effect until next year.

Sabathia appealed the ban that was issued by Major League Baseball. Any games he misses will come at the start of the 2019 season.

The Yankees will host Oakland in the American League wild-card game Wednesday.

Sabathia was penalized for hitting Rays catcher Jesus Sucre in the leg leading off the bottom of the sixth inning at Tropicana Field on Thursday. The 38-year-old lefty was ejected, and the benches cleared.

“It is what it is,” Sabathia said. “Everybody saw what happened.”

Sabathia was cruising with a big lead when he got tossed. He needed two more innings to trigger a $500,000 bonus for pitching 155 innings this season.

VOLLEYBALL

Jenna Rosenthal notched 15 kills as Marquette swept Georgetown, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19, at the Al McGuire Center.

Allie Barber also had 15 kills, going over 1,000 for her career with the Golden Eagles (12-4, 3-1 Big East).

UW-Green Bay 3, UW-Milwaukee 1: Abby Koenen had 12 kills but the Panthers (2-15, 1-3 Horizon League) fell to the Phoenix (7-8, 2-2), 25-18, 25-20, 25-27, 25-14, at the Klotsche Center.

HOCKEY

Matt Lane scored the Milwaukee Admirals’ only goal in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Wolves in an exhibition at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
