Classic horror movies will be on tap at local theaters

You can get scared anytime of year, but October’s when the monsters come out at the movies. Here’s a quick guide to the off-the-grid horror movies at Milwaukeea­rea theaters this month.

Avalon Theater

The fourth annual Shocktober­fest at the Avalon Theater, 2473 S. Kinnickinn­ic Ave., offers Grade A horror at 9:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. $5. Info: avalonmke.com.

Times Cinema

As part of its Friday Night Freak Show, the Times Cinema, 5906 W. Vliet St., is bringing back the 1978 classic “Halloween” — which, not so coincident­ally, has a sequel in theaters Oct. 19. The Times has the ’78 version at 9 p.m. Oct. 12, with a DJ spin at 8 p.m. $5. Info: timescinem­a.com.

Oriental Theatre

Before it’s taken over by the Milwaukee Film Festival Oct. 18, the Oriental Theatre, 2230 N. Farwell Ave., is cramming in some offbeat horror releases. $11, $9 for Milwaukee Film members, $8 for seniors 60 and older, $6 for kids 12 and younger. Info: mkefilm.org/oriental-theatre.
