HIP HOP ROYALTY TOUR
Style: An assortment of top rap veterans sharing the same stage on the same night.
Backstory: There’s a fair argument that we’re living in a golden age of hip-hop right now — as of last year, it is the most consumed music genre in North America — but these five artists lived in the first one. Rakim’s rightfully been revered since his classic debut album with Eric B., “Paid in Full,” on which he offered a novel contrast to his peers with a mesmerizing, meticulous flow that emphasized his smart lyricism. Slick Rick is among the most sampled rappers of all time, especially his genre gem “La Di Da Di.” Doug E. Fresh’s superhuman beatboxing skills still stun after three decades. Roxanne Shanté is experiencing a career bounceback following the release of the acclaimed biopic “Roxanne Roxanne” on Netflix this spring. And Big Daddy Kane’s cutting lyricism has been admired some two decades since his last album, with superstars like Eminem among his admirers. Why you should go?: We’ll level with you — last year’s Rakim show at Turner Hall Ballroom, a celebration of “Paid in Full,” was underwhelming, with the hip-hop legend coasting through a truncated set. But it’s safe to speculate that Rakim has too much pride to phone in his performance at a show featuring several rap veterans who could potentially upstage him. The feeling likely will be mutual.
