Voyager natural wine bar opens in Bay View

- Carol Deptolla

Voyager, the wine bar with a focus on natural wines that’s been in the works since summer, is open now in Bay View.

The bar, which also mixes cocktails and pours beer and hard cider, is at 422 E. Lincoln Ave., in what previously was a smoothie cafe and a bakery.

The space’s makeover includes large windows, dark walls and drapes, and a wood-clad bar.

Wines made with minimal intervention are growing in popularity; the wines at Voyager come mainly from smaller producers in Europe and the U.S.

They’re sold by the glass, carafe or bottle, and are moderately priced — bottles range from $19 to $42 on the current list, and glasses start at $6.

Customers will find bottles like the sparkling Rosato Pet-Nat from Channing Daughters on Long Island, N.Y., and the Castrillo del Duero Tempranillo from Alfredo Maestro in Spain’s Ribera del Duero.

As for cocktails, Voyager’s list of drinks ($10) includes one called the Necessary Evil, described as an alcohol-forward version of the Last Word, the pre-Prohibition gin cocktail invented in Detroit.

It also pours some beer and hard cider; although the focus is on wine and a brief rotating list of cocktails, the owners have said they want to have something for everyone.

The bar also sells light bites to go with the drinks.

Voyager is owned by Jordan Burich and Micah Buck. They previously worked at the restaurant Dandan in the Third Ward, Burich as its first beverage director and Buck as saucier. A third partner in the bar is Kathryn Lochmann, who is Buck’s wife.

Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, 3 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
