Milwaukee dancer wins Chaka Khan contest on Instagram
R&B legend Chaka Khan is releasing her first album in more than a decade. The first very danceable single and music video, “Like Sugar,” has already hit the interweb.
To promote her album, Khan had a video challenge on Instagram. Fans submitted videos of them dancing along to “Like Sugar.”
Virgillette Adams of Milwaukee found out Thursday that her video won the challenge. She won $3,000 and will get to meet and perform with Khan.
The challenge had been going on for two months, and Adams knew she was a finalist, but she was amazed she won.
She posts a lot of dance videos on her Instagram account.
“In my head, I’m always creating dance visuals,” Adams said. “If I hear a song, I’ll start making dances. I was going to make two dances to Chaka Khan songs. And then I came across her new song and decided to make up a dance to that.”
She just started teaching an introductory hip-hop class at DanceWorks.
“When I leave here, my goal is teaching and performing around the city with people,” she said. “Dance is my first passion.”
She usually does freestyle dances, making the moves up as she goes. Her friend Von Canon shoots the videos. They took the video for “Like Sugar” in a field outside Whitnall Park.
“I’m always trying to scope out spots here,” Adams said. “I prefer to do most of my videos outside. I was trying to take advantage of it before it got cold.”
