St. Norbert claims spot in playoffs

- Special to the Journal Sentinel

St. Norbert punched its ticket to the NCAA Division III football playoffs Saturday.

But it wasn’t easy.

The Green Knights outlasted Monmouth, 10-7, in the Midwest Conference championship game at Schneider Stadium in De Pere.

St. Norbert (9-1, 5-0) won its 17th Midwest Conference title, while the Fighting Scots (8-2, 4-1) came up short in their bid for an unprecedented third straight championship.

The Green Knights scored all of their points in the first quarter and then had to sweat it out.

Defensive back Hunter Prokash intercepted a pass by Monmouth quarterback Hayden Nelson at the St. Norbert 48 with 4 minutes 21 seconds left in the game. The St. Norbert defense forced six turnovers on the day.

St. Norbert’s offense proceeded to run out the clock. The clinching play was a 26-yard run by David Lox on a second and 11.
