76ers swing deal for Butler

-

Jimmy Butler has his wish: He’s out of Minnesota.

A person with knowledge of the situation said Saturday that the former Marquette star is being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in a package that will send Dario Saric and Robert Covington to the Timberwolves.

Justin Patton also will be sent to Philadelphia, and Jerryd Bayless and a 2022 second-round pick also are going to Minnesota, the person said.

Philadelphia’s “Process” led it to the second round of the playoffs last season behind two of the game’s youngest, brightest stars in big man Joel Embiid and point guard Ben Simmons. Butler, an elite wing and outstanding defender, will join them in a quest to rule the Eastern Conference now that LeBron James has joined the Los Angeles Lakers after eight straight trips to the NBA Finals with Miami and Cleveland.

The first order of business is making the trade official, something that could come in time to get Butler in uniform for a game at Miami on Monday.

SOCCER Maria Sanchez

scored two goals as host Santa Clara turned back UW-Milwaukee, 4-1, in the first round of the NCAA women’s tournament Saturday at Stevens Stadium.

The seventh-ranked Broncos (17-3-1) scored three times in the final 21 minutes to put away the Panthers (16-2-1).

UWM freshman Jelena Sever scored from 25 yards to tie the match at 61 minutes 24 seconds.

“We stuck together and scored a good goal,” said Panthers coach Troy Fabiano. “You look at it and it’s 1-1 with 21 minutes left. So, you’re right there competing and then they get a few goals at the end when you’re trying to throw some numbers forward.”

TENNIS

Barbora Strycova and Katerina Siniakova won their singles for the Czech Republic to take a commanding 2-0 lead over the defending champion United States in the Fed Cup final.

Strycova rallied from a set down to defeat Sofia Kenin, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4.

Siniakova stretched the advantage by dispatching Alison Riske, 6-3, 7-6 (2), to the delight of more than 14,000 fans at Prague’s O2 Arena.

To win, the 18-time champion U.S. would have to become the first team to come back from 2-0 down in the final.

VOLLEYBALL

Dana Rettke rammed home 13 kills and Tionna Willams added 10 to lead eighth-ranked Wisconsin to a 25-21, 25-14, 25-21 victory over Indiana at the UW Field House.

Sydney Hilley finished with 40 assists for the Badgers (18-6, 11-5 Big Ten).

BOXING

Undisputed world cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk successfully defended his four belts and likely sent Tony Bellew into retirement by knocking out the British fighter in the eighth round in Manchester, England.

It was the Ukrainian fighter’s 16th straight win as a professional and his first defense since becoming the unified champion. He could now move up to heavyweight.

The 35-year-old Bellew, who had said this would be his last fight, had the better of Usyk early in the fight but began to get worn down by the sixth round. From Journal Sentinel wire reports
