Oak Creek police arrest suspects in 30-vehicle burglary spree

OAK CREEK - Oak Creek police have arrested two people in connection with a car burglary spree that left about 30 vehicles damaged or rummaged through.

The suspects were taken into custody Friday by Germantown police, about a day after police received reports of the incident, according to Capt. David Stecker of the Oak Creek Police Department.

Stecker said one suspect is 17; both are from Milwaukee. Charges are being sought from the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.

All of the cars were parked in private, locked garages for five apartment buildings, according to a police news release.

Milwaukee police officer shoots, wound 42-year-old man

A Milwaukee police officer shot and wounded a 42-year-old man about noon Monday in the 3500 block of West Clarke Street.

In a news release, Sgt. Sheronda Grant said police came to the area after a resident flagged them down about an armed man. As officers approached the man, an “encounter” occurred and one of the officers shot the man.

At a news conference from the scene, Capt. Jeffrey Norman said the injuries to the man are not believed to be life-threatening. The 38-year-old officer involved in the shooting is a 13-year department veteran and was not injured.

A weapon was recovered from the scene.

Norman also announced that there will be an internal investigation of the shooting conducted by the Milwaukee Police Department’s Homicide Division. Had the shooting been fatal, an outside agency would handle the investigation, under state law.

Boy was playing with lighter fluid before starting himself on fire

NEW BERLIN - The 11-year-old boy who accidentally caught fire in late October did so while playing with lighter fluid in an empty house after school, and originally concocted a story about intruders doing it before recanting the tale, according to a police report Monday.

He is also expected to make a full recovery, according to a GoFundMe page that had already achieved its goal of raising $5,000 for the family.

The boy initially told police he came home from school Oct. 22 to find the front door ajar, and after stepping inside, was confronted by two masked men in all black. He said they chased him into the garage where they doused him in lighter fluid and set him alight, the report said.

But the boy later admitted to police that was a lie, told to avoid getting in trouble with his parents, the report said.

Authorities responded to the area of Moorland Road and Rogers Drive around 3:15 p.m. for a report of a boy on fire.

The boy eventually told police he decided to play with lighter fluid and a lighter he found in his parents’ garage, the report said. He told police he may have spilled some of the fluid on his shirt. He became startled by a loud sound — believed to be a door slamming shut from the wind — that caused him to jump and bring the lighter in contact with the clothing, the report said.

The boy’s back caught fire, the report said. He ran to his neighbor, who told him to roll on the grass to put the fire out.

Authorities have again begun a search for a man who previously led them on a 15-day manhunt in June following a violent domestic incident in Eagle.

Jonathan Pogreba, already facing three felony charges stemming from the incident at his former home five months ago, has additionally been charged with two felony counts of bail jumping and has a warrant out for his arrest, as a result.

Pogreba, 43, had been scheduled to appear at a hearing Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court. According to court records, he failed to show up, and his attorney had no information on his

whereabouts.

Facing a maximum penalty of 16 years in prison if convicted on previous charges, Pogreba posted a $150,000 cash bond Oct. 29 ahead of his hearing date, securing his release from the Waukesha County Jail, where he had been held since turning himself in June 21.
