Marquette in AP top 25 poll for first time under Wojciechowski

- Ben Steele

The Marquette men’s basketball team finally found its way back to national recognition on Monday.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) are ranked No. 24 in the latest version of the Associated Press’ Top 25 poll. That’s the first time MU has reached the rankings under head coach Steve Wojciechowski, who is in his fifth season at the school.

MU hasn’t been in the AP Top 25 since Dec. 1, 2013. The Golden Eagles had been at No. 25 the week prior, but then lost to San Diego State in the Wooden Classic.

Now MU is back after season-opening victories over Maryland-Baltimore County and Bethune-Cookman.

“I think it’s well-deserved but at the same time we are still hungry for more,” said junior guard Markus Howard, who was also named Big East player of the week on Monday.

“We don’t want to be satisfied with anything and we don’t want to let that affect us in any way. We’re going to continue to work.”

In their first game as a ranked team, the Golden Eagles will face Indiana on Wednesday in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers have the second-highest amount of points in the “other receiving votes” category of the AP poll.

The USA Today coaches poll does not publish this week. In that poll’s latest ranking Oct. 25, the Golden Eagles were No. 4 in the “others” listing.
