Milwaukee detective arrested in domestic battery case

- Talis Shelbourne

A Milwaukee police detective was in custody Wednesday pending charges of domestic violence.

Greenfield police were called Tuesday to the home belonging to the girlfriend of Milwaukee Detective Jason E. Rodriguez, 39, on a report of domestic battery. An officer observed blood smears on the woman’s face and on her right hand and swelling on the left side of her face. She told an officer that she could not hear out of her right ear.

The woman told officers the incident started after she confronted Rodriguez about cheating on her. She said in addition to punching her, he kicked her in the face, grabbed her hair and shoved her face into the floor.

The report stated she ran to a neighbor’s house to wait for the police. Medical personnel told police she received 13 stitches for an injury on her right leg and also suffered a fractured pinky finger, among other injuries.

Greenfield police said the Milwaukee County district attorney’s office would review charges.

The woman stated this was not her first violent incident with Rodriguez, stating that she slapped Rodriguez at Amann’s Bar two to three months ago and he retaliated by pushing her against a wall and slapping her across the face with “full force.”

Rodriguez is a member of the Special Investigations division and was part of a team investigating the death of Officer Charles Irvine Jr., who was killed over the summer. Rodriguez was also one of the targets of Jonathan Copeland Jr., who has been charged with the attempted homicide of Rodriguez in addition to shooting and killing Officer Michael Michalski.

The status of a Milwaukee Police Department internal investigation was not immediately known.
